FOSSIL is a website and a memecoin, $FOSSIL. It is entertainment built on public research data. Read this before you use it.
What FOSSIL is
FOSSIL turns a Solana address into a spot on Earth's ice-free land and shows the rock and the nearest recorded fossil there, using public data from Macrostrat, the Paleobiology Database and PhyloPic. The mapping is deterministic and documented on the site and in the public API.
What it is not
It is not a fossil sale. Nobody owns, buys or sells a specimen, a site or any rights in one through FOSSIL. A saved fossil and its card are records and pictures, not property in anything physical. Cards that mint as NFTs at launch are images of a public record with a line the holder wrote.
It is not investment advice, and $FOSSIL is not an investment product. Memecoins are volatile and can lose all their value. Only use money you can afford to lose.
It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Macrostrat, the Paleobiology Database, PhyloPic, Natural Earth, the International Commission on Stratigraphy or any museum, university or survey.
The data
Rock columns and geologic maps come from Macrostrat and the sources it compiles (CC-BY 4.0). Fossil occurrences come from the Paleobiology Database (CC-BY 4.0) and the publications each record cites. Silhouettes come from PhyloPic under each image's own licence; FOSSIL only uses images released as CC0, into the public domain or under CC BY, and credits the artist on every card. Records can contain mistakes, and they change as researchers update them. FOSSIL shows them as they are.
Your wallet
Signing in signs a plain text message, never a transaction. FOSSIL never asks for your seed phrase or private key and never moves funds. "Use my wallet" only reads your public address.
Your line
The line you write on your card is yours and public once you save it. Don't write anything unlawful, hateful or personal about someone else. We may remove text that is.
No warranty
FOSSIL is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. The data services it reads can be slow or down. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the site or the coin.
